NSW Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds

For people in Illawarra, South Coast, Riverina, Snowy Mountains and parts of Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Lower Western and Australian Capital Territory Forecast Districts.

Areas of damaging winds developing over much of southern New South Wales overnight and Friday.

Weather Situation: A low pressure system will intensify over western Victoria this evening and then track east-southeastwards towards eastern Bass Strait on Friday morning. In response, vigorous northwest to westerly flow will develop over southern New South Wales.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h, are likely to develop over western parts of the warning area late this evening, then extend eastwards over alpine areas to southern New south Wales coast early Friday morning.

Winds are expected to ease over the west on Friday morning, with this easing trend spreading to eastern parts during Friday afternoon and evening.

Locations which may be affected include Nowra, Batemans Bay, Eden, Cooma, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Deniliquin, Hay and Wentworth.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
