QLD Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Large Hail, Heavy Rain, Damaging Winds

Severe Thunderstorms are moving closer to the coast

Weather Situation: An active trough is sweeping across southern QLD with a warm, humid airmass extending from the coast into the Darling Downs and Central Highlands. These conditions have combined with strong winds in the upper atmosphere ahead of an upper trough leading to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and are likely to continue into this evening.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding is expected in the southern Darling Downs and Southeast Coast Districts over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Dalby, Maroochydore, Gympie, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Ipswich, Kingaroy, Coolangatta, Stanthorpe, Caboolture, Cleveland, Gatton and Jimboomba.
Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Maranoa and Warrego district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.
A 96km/h wind gust was recorded at Wellcamp Airport at 04:30pm this afternoon.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
